Sophie's research focuses on three interconnected areas:
(1) Categories of migration and population, examining how groups such as expatriates, international students and third culture kids are defined and governed
(2) The production of migration, exploring the infrastructures, institutions and industries that shape mobility.
(3) The practice and production of academic knowledge, investigating how knowledge is created, circulated and experienced within higher education and research
Central within this research has been understanding inequalities and the operation of power, particularly in terms of privilege. Empirically, Sophie’s work has looked at: expatriates/highly skilled migrants in Singapore, the Global Mobility Industry, Third Culture Kids, students undertaking international placements, the children of British migrants, arrival infrastructures, international students as fees payers. This work has been funded by: ESRC, ASET, RGS-IBG, 海角视频 and UK Government.
Sophie leads and contributes to teaching in three key areas: geographies of migration; geographies of education; and methods.
Sophie welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students in her research areas.
